Imperial Japanese Army Type26 Revolver / 帝国陸軍26年式リボルバー

南部１４年式は大戦中の帝国軍制式拳銃として有名だが、実際には数多くの旧式拳銃が将校たちに使用されていた。
明治２６年、西暦１８９３年に制式化された２６年式拳銃は、初の国産軍用制式拳銃であった。ベルギーの Nagant M1878 とその弾薬 9mmx22Rを手本に発展させ、過去に採用されていたS&W No.3の中折れ式機構を組み合わせたかたちでデザインされた。ダブルアクション・オンリーであり、シリンダー・ストップ用ラッチ機構が省略されている。（ゆえに、シリンダーはトリガー作動時のみせりあがるカムで保持され、通常は固定されておらず自由に回転する。） Nagant M1878と、（厳密には）フランスのFagnus リボルバーに習い、26年式のフレームはそのサイドプレートが簡単に開くようになっている。ゆえにこの拳銃はメンテナンスとクリーニングがしやすいことでも有名だった。 しかしながら、この拳銃が最も知られているのはその「威力不足」さであり、これは、中折れ式フレームの強度限界によるところが大きい。 日本の9mmx22R弾は理論上米国の.３８sp弾に相当する威力、とされてはいるが、中折れフレームの強度不足に対応するための安全策として、あえて深いライフリングを彫り、発射圧力を減圧するという苦肉の策がとられた、ゆえに当然マズルベロシティーは低下、旧式な弾頭設計の採用もあいまってそのマンストッピングパワー不足が深刻であった。
それ以外では２６年式拳銃は比較的信頼性の高い拳銃として、南部１４年式の独特なセミオート機構を信頼しなかった一部の将校達に大戦を通じて愛用され続けた。日本的でユニークな外見や、中折れ式のおもしろさが米軍兵士の間で人気となり、ヨーロッパ戦線でいうところのルガーP08拳銃のように、戦場土産として最も人気の拳銃であった。
Nambu Type14 is rather famous Japanese Imperial Army service pistol from WW2, yet in fact there were large number of older armaments remained in use by many Japanese officers. First issued in 1893 (Meiji 26), Type 26 revolver was Japan`s first self-production military service pistol. It was designed after the Belgian Nagant M1878 and its 9mmx22R rounds combined with S&W No.3`s break open mechanism. It was DA only mechanism therefore the cylinder stop latch was omitted (the cylinder is correctly held only by the locking cam that was exposed when the trigger is pulled). Learned from Belgian Nagant M1878 as well as French Fagnus revolver, Type 26`s receiver sideplate opens with no tools needed, therefore it was quite easy to access Type26`s internals for cleaning and maintenance purposes. Type 26 was however known for its insufficient man-stopping power. This was due to the fundamental issue in break-open frame. While the 9mmx22R cartridge was Japanese equivalent to .38 special in theory, its expanding gas pressure was deemed too strong for Type26 frame, therefore the barrel rifling was intentionally cut deeper in order to let the pressure escape, resulting in the decrease of muzzle velocity though in exchange of safety.
Otherwise, Type26 was fairly reliable sidearm, loved by those army officers who didn`t trust the newer Nambu14`s automatic loading mechanism. Its unique appearance and the break-open mechanism attracted many U.S.Soldiers. Type26 was therefore highly desired war-souvenir item simuler to Luger P08 in the European front.
